A paleo diet is generally defined as one that is high in nutrients, unprocessed or in other words derived from plant and/or animal sources. Some people refer to a paleo diet as the “cave man” diet as it’s named for the Paleolithic era. However, traditional paleo diets do not take into account malnutrition from years in active addiction and, for some, malnutrition in their recovery. The Spiritual Adrenaline Addiction Paleo plan recommends the macro-nutrients you eat be within the following ranges:

Healthy Fats

Protein

Carbohydrates

30% - 40%

30% - 40%

30% - 40%

Protein serves as the building block of the body and represents 10-20 percent of body mass (depending on your age, weight and overall health.) Amino acids bond to make protein. Protein increases the metabolic rate and helps to reduce appetite while providing a consistent source of energy without spiking blood sugar.

Fats have a terrible reputation but are necessary for the body to function properly. Fats play a critical role in digestion by serving as the essential element for absorption, transportation, and use of vitamins A, D, E and K. Fat cells also serve as insulation to maintain proper body temperature, and as a source of energy in times of caloric need, i.e., after depletion of glucose and carbohydrates. Most importantly, for those in detox, healthy fats help reduce cravings and stabilize blood sugar while providing energy.

Addiction Paleo also recommends complex carbohydrates rather than processed carbs. Carbs are necessary for body and brain function and for most people their primary energy source. How do you know what a complex carbohydrate is? Simple. If the source is from an animal or plant, it is most likely a complex carb. Almost all processed carbs are man-made. For many, active addiction and an unhealthy recovery lifestyle bring with it lots of fast foods or other types of processed foods. So adjusting to eating complex carbohydrates rather than processed carbs can take time to get used to. However, if you stick with it and remain open to dietary change, you will see benefits in the long-term that keep you committed to eating clean and heathy.

We recommend starting your Addiction Paleo program with a higher intake of carbohydrates and then slowly reducing daily carb intake. Remember, we offer only recommendations. Take what works for you and leave the rest. However, by starting with a higher percentage of carbs in your diet, you can avoid any dramatic changes in your overall carbohydrate intake and any of the side effects that “carb withdrawal” can cause. Yes, reducing your carbohydrate intake can result in withdrawal symptoms similar to drugs and alcohol.

What is also different about our Addiction Paleo plan is you do not need to count your macronutrients. Rather, we focus on the time of day you will be eating specific macro-nutrients. This eliminates the need to count calories and makes it easier to meet your nutritional goals by focusing on your differing energy needs at different times of the day.
